Pandemic Drives Usage Of Temporary Workers

Most of the news surrounding the working class and COVID-19 focuses on job losses and business closures. However, some industries are experiencing increased demand due to the pandemic. As online shopping continues to surge, supply chains and logistics providers are under pressure to keep up with increasing demand.

Industries previously considered to be niche, such as meal delivery services and medical supply manufacturers are also undergoing new waves of interest. This results in labor shortages, delays, and ultimately lost revenue.

Labor Needs

Many businesses have had to rely on temporary workers to fill gaps and meet deadlines amid busy quarters. The challenge they face is how to make the best use of temporary workers while mitigating the risk of negligent hiring.

Although they may have a pressing need for labor, it is crucial for companies to maintain consistency in their pre-employment screening processes. Just because an employee may only work at the company for three to six months does not mean that they cannot pose a risk to the business or its customers.

Screening temporary workers and volunteers reduce the risk of liability, protects your companies’ reputation, and most importantly it protects the people you serve. It may also be a legal requirement to screen temp workers based on your industry. Therefore, it is important that you remain in compliance with your companies’ standards.

Employers & Impact

Some industries, especially the logistics sector, will continue to require larger numbers of temporary employees as pandemic-related economic factors persist. Others have always relied on temp workers, but the pandemic merits a re-assessment of their roles.

Employers should be aware of the friction that can result from the mingling of full-time employees and temporary employees. Employers should promote a company culture that keeps everyone on equal footing. Treating temps with the same level of scrutiny in the hiring process reduces the likelihood of negligent hiring. This type of culture can also help identify and encourage the employees you may like to bring on board permanently.
